Amitriptyline transdermal gel compounded for dogs and cats has been used to treat separation anxiety and generalized anxiety in dogs. In cats, amitriptyline has been used to treat spraying and anxiety. It has also been useful in the adjunctive treatment of pruritus, or chronic pain of neuropathic origin in dogs and cats. Amitriptyline may also be an alternative in birds to help reduce feather plucking.
